Patricia Flynn: From the Corridors of LCHS, to the Hallowed Halls of Academia, Corporate Boardrooms and UN Committees

Posted by: February 19th, 2014

Following her graduation from Classical, Patricia Flynn, Class of ‘68’ went on to further her education in economics. Her degrees include a BA in Economics from Emmanuel College in 1972, a MA in Economics from Boston University (BU) in 1973, and a PhD in Economics from BU in 1980. Today, Pat is recognized as a mover and shaker in the fields of corporate governance, technological change and gender equality. She exemplifies the best of so many Classical graduates who have used their energy, talents, and knowledge to make this a better community, city, nation, and world to live in.

Pat is currently the Trustee Professor of Economics and Management at Bentley University, where she served as the Dean of the McCallum Graduate School of Business from 1992 to 2002. Her teaching and research have focused on technology-based economic development, the roles and responsibilities of corporate directors, and women in business. Her books and articles have been cited in a variety of media including The Wall Street Journal, The Economist, Business Week, The Chronicle of Higher Education, The Irish Times, and Harvard Business Review. Pat also has testified before Congress and appeared on NBC’s Today Show discussing the impacts of technological change on jobs and workers.

When not teaching or writing, Pat has brought her knowledge and understanding of the business world and higher education to a variety of corporate and not-for-profit boards. She currently serves on the mutual funds board of Columbia Funds, and has been director of the Boston Fed Bank Corp, U.S. Trust, and the Federal Savings Bank. Examples of her leadership service on not-for-profit boards include the: The Mass Taxpayers Foundation, New England Baptist Hospital, the Mass Technology Collaborative, and the Big Sister Association of Greater Boston.

Today, Pat takes great pride in her ongoing involvement with the United Nations initiative PRME (Principals for Responsible Management Education), whose mission is to develop a new generation of business leaders capable of managing the complex challenges facing business and society in the 21st century. Launched at the 2007 UN Global Compact Leaders Summit in Geneva, Switzerland, the PRME initiative now includes over 500 business schools in 80 countries. Pat is co-chair of the PRME Working Group on Gender Equality, with two individuals from the United Kingdom and Canada. The Working Group’s first project was to create a Global repository of resources to help faculty incorporate gender issues into their courses and research. Pat’s current PRME activities include co-editing two books on lessons learned and Raffle Fundraiser a challenges that remain in integrating gender issues into management education, and into the workplace.

Despite her involvement in the academic world, her extensive time devoted to writing and research, her leadership role within numerous private and non-profit organizations, and her work to help create an equitable and effective global business environment, Pat has not forgotten her Lynn Classical roots. Pat is the sponsor of the Patricia M. Flynn Scholarship awarded each year to a Classical senior going on to Bentley University. If there is no Classical student going to Bentley, it is awarded to a senior going to a college or university majoring in a business related field. Whenever possible, Pat takes the time out of  her busy schedule to come to the LCHS Alumni Awards night to personally present her scholarship.
