Aug 21 is set for the Alumni and Friends Golf Tournament and Dinner. This is the largest fundraising event of the year for the Alumni and Friends of Lynn Classical High School. It’s also the most important event for the association and your support is needed. This fundraiser will set the foundation for the 2011 scholarship fund that is used to create and distribute scholarships to deserving graduating seniors. I (Ed Stafford) can’t speak for everyone, but Classical gave me the tools, confidence and education, setting me on a path for a reasonably successful future. Now that I’m here, fulfilling my dreams, I haven’t forgotten where I came from and who helped me get here. Because of that, I’m more than happy to give back in any way I can so that other Classical Grads can also continue down that path to success. The bonus here is that not only am I contributing to a great and worthy cause, but I’ll be doing it with a great day of golf and dinning with family, friends and maybe meet some new people at the same time.

Please consider spending the day with us or even just an evening dinner to support The Alumni Association and help pave the way to success for Classical Grads.

August 21st is just around the corner! If you have not registered for the tournament yet, be sure to do so As Soon As Possible to secure your spot and allow us to get an accurate head count for the event.

Do you think you have what it takes to compete against some of the best golfers to never make the PGA tour? Then polish up the old clubs, get a few friends together, and save the date for August 21st, 2010.

If you’re not a golfer, or just want to observe and mingle, you can skip the tournament, come out and enjoy the company of others, and join us for dinner.

The Alumni and Friends Of Lynn Classical High School has secured a Golf Tournament and Dinner at Kelly Greens in Nahant MA. Proceeds will be used to support and fund our Scholarship Program.

Golf

This is a 9-hole tournament and will kick off at 3:00 pm. Golfers should plan to arrive early enough to organize your teams and check-in with our registration volunteers at the course.

• 1 cart per foursome (sorry, there is a limited number of carts available)
• 9 holes of golf
• Boxed Lunch provided by Sidekim Foods
• Prizes for Best Ball, Closest to Pin, etc.
• Dinner

Dinner

Dinner, served at about 5:00 pm, will be buffett style Surf and Turf (steak tips and baked haddock) along with salad, veggie medley and roasted potatoes.

Since 1994, our organization has been committed to providing Lynn Classical Seniors with scholarship awards to help them realize their dreams of a college education.  Our goal this year is to reach and exceed a total of $500,000.00 in scholarship awards given by the association to Lynn Classical’s inspiring and aspiring students. This is an exciting time for us as we approach this goal.

In order for the Alumni and Friends of Lynn Classical High School to continue its dedicated work to provide worthy students with scholarship assistance, we will be hosting a Golf Tournament and Dinner on August 21, 2010 at Kelley Greens in Nahant. Would you believe that a Classical graduate played on not one but two World Series Championship ball teams? Well it’s true. Robert Dreyer, Class of 1938 holds that distinction.

Bob has a love of playing ball that dates back to his early years playing sandlot ball in his neighborhood and at the summer YMCA Camp Rotary. Bob displayed his baseball talent at Classical as a hard throwing pitcher and right fielder on the Rams 1936, 37, and 38 baseball teams. During the non-baseball seasons, you would find Bob on the sidelines as a Classical cheerleader. By the end of his time at Classical, he rose to the position of Head Cheerleader. Following graduation from Classical, Bob unsuccessfully tried out as a picture for the Red Sox in 1941.

Bob continued his love affair with baseball after being drafted into the Army Air force in March of 1941 were he became an Air Traffic Controller serving at many Army Airbases throughout the States – “I played ball and directed airway traffic at all the stops along the way”. Following his discharge from the Army Air Corps in Dec. 1945, Bob’s involvement with playing ball got lost along the way, or so it seemed, when several years passed before he found his way back to the diamond.

Then in 1986, following his retirement, Bob and his wife Nancy moved to North Fort Myers, Fl. where Bob rekindled his love of “playing ball”. In 1988 at the age of 68 he tried out for the Lake Fairways seasonal softball league for those over 55 and made the team. By 2002 his softball career had brought him to the Fort Meyers Over 80’s Softball League. In 2002 and 2003 his team qualified and won back to back championships in the 80 Plus World Series Softball Tournament in Des Monies, Iowa. Sad to say that Bob’s outstanding softball career was suddenly ended by a serious auto accident in2006. He is now ok and is concentrating his efforts in mastering the more gentle game of golf.

Two World Series Championships, not bad for a 89 year old kid who learned his skills on the ball diamonds of Lynn, Ma.

Save the date to come “Out On The Tiles” and celebrate at this multi-class reunion for Lynn Classical High School Classes of the Early-Mid 80′s.

So far, reps from classes of 1983, 1984, and 1985 are participating on the “planning committee”…
