Would you believe that a Classical graduate played on not one but two World Series Championship ball teams? Well it’s true. Robert Dreyer, Class of 1938 holds that distinction.

Credit: adwriter / Patrick

Bob has a love of playing ball that dates back to his early years playing sandlot ball in his neighborhood and at the summer YMCA Camp Rotary. Bob displayed his baseball talent at Classical as a hard throwing pitcher and right fielder on the Rams 1936, 37, and 38 baseball teams. During the non-baseball seasons, you would find Bob on the sidelines as a Classical cheerleader. By the end of his time at Classical, he rose to the position of Head Cheerleader. Following graduation from Classical, Bob unsuccessfully tried out as a picture for the Red Sox in 1941.

Bob continued his love affair with baseball after being drafted into the Army Air force in March of 1941 were he became an Air Traffic Controller serving at many Army Airbases throughout the States – “I played ball and directed airway traffic at all the stops along the way”. Following his discharge from the Army Air Corps in Dec. 1945, Bob’s involvement with playing ball got lost along the way, or so it seemed, when several years passed before he found his way back to the diamond.

Then in 1986, following his retirement, Bob and his wife Nancy moved to North Fort Myers, Fl. where Bob rekindled his love of “playing ball”. In 1988 at the age of 68 he tried out for the Lake Fairways seasonal softball league for those over 55 and made the team. By 2002 his softball career had brought him to the Fort Meyers Over 80’s Softball League. In 2002 and 2003 his team qualified and won back to back championships in the 80 Plus World Series Softball Tournament in Des Monies, Iowa. Sad to say that Bob’s outstanding softball career was suddenly ended by a serious auto accident in2006. He is now ok and is concentrating his efforts in mastering the more gentle game of golf.

Two World Series Championships, not bad for a 89 year old kid who learned his skills on the ball diamonds of Lynn, Ma.

Jeff Gaudet, Class of ‘84′, is the founder and president of ASP Staffing located in Centennial Park, Peabody MA. ASP Staffing is a permanent placement agency that matches quality companies looking for qualified professional candidates in the accounting, sales, and insurance industries”.

The College Years and Beyond

After graduating from Classical, Jeff entered UMass Amherst, and later transferred to UMass Boston earning a BA Degree in Sociology. After graduating from UMass Boston, he worked for four years at Lanier World Wide, a Fortune 100 company specializing in the global sales of office systems and equipment. Upon leaving World Wide, Jeff went to work for Knight Rider (now known as Ikon), a litigation support company. While at Knight Rider, Jeff worked to aid companies in litigation to discover, publish, and disseminate relevant evidence information.

In 1993, Jeff bought a house in Lynn and a few weeks later married his wife Lori. Their first child Jennifer was born in 1995 and their second child, Josilyn, followed in 1997.

In 1997 Jeff left Ikon to work for American Personnel/Accountsource, a head hunting permanent placement company. All was going well as Jeff’s family was growing and his was career continued to advanced at American Personnel. Then in 2001, their daughter Josilyn was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis.

Over the next couple of years Josilyn and her family endured a total of 34 weeks in the hospital to treat her condition. Jeff still managed to continued to maintain strong career advancement and by 2002, he was the Director of the company’s Permanent Placement Division and overseeing the company’s recruiters.

A Change of Plans:

In 2004, resulting from the challenges Jeff and his family now faced, Jeff began to believe that he was investing too much of himself into his job and not enough into his family. It was at this time that he and his wife Lori decided he should leave American Personnel/Accountsource and open his own placement company.

In 2005, Jeff opened ASP Staffing in downtown Lynn. The successful growth of his company led to the opening of an ASP Staffing branch office in Holliston Ma. while ASP headquarters moved to Centennial Park Peabody Ma. Jeff is proud of the fact that his company has successfully worked with many Classical grads to find them new and better employment.

Today, Josilyn is doing well. Jeff credits her doctors and the CF Foundation for her current well-being. Josilyn is now 11 years old and is a student at Sisson Elememtary School in Lynn, MA. Her older sister Jennifer is now 13 years old, and is a student at Pickering Middle School in Lynn, MA. Both are young athletes active in softball, Pop Warner Football, skiing, swimming, horseback riding and track, and according to Jeff, are super students.

Jeff and Lori are strong advocates and fund raisers for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, pointing out that the Foundation is recognized as the number one non-profit foundation in the world, with ninety cents of every dollar going to find a cure for CF.

Jeff, keep up the fight.

Clark Casteel, Class of ‘85’, has been a licensed practicing Acupuncturist in the state of Georgia since 2000. Clark played a crucial role in the struggle to have Acupuncture recognized as a legitimate field of medical science in Georgia. In 1999, Clark was an active member in “Georgia Friends for Acupuncture”. The group’s goal was to have Acupuncture recognized as a scientific branch of medicine and be licensed in the State of Georgia . Clark and the group’s work met with success in 2000 when Georgia became the 48th State to license Acupuncturists. Clark, in fact, became the second person to be licensed in Georgia as an Acupuncturist.

Following graduation from Classical, Clark entered the University of New Hampshire graduating in 1989 with a B.A. Degree in History and a Minor in Art and Environmental Studies. In 1995, Clark was awarded a Diploma in Acupuncture from the National Certification of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Also in 1995, he was recognized as a Doctor of Oriental Medicine by the State of New Mexico.

Clark and Maureen, his wife of 10 years, are now living in Georgia with their three children Annalise 16, Michael 4, and Benjaimin 5.

Did you know that John (Jack) Harney , Class President and Valedictorian of the Class of 42, has had a distinguished life in the service of his country since his graduation from Classical. As a Senior at Classical, John was awarded a Competitive National Scholarship to Harvard. Soon after, John had to withdraw from Harvard when he was drafted into the Army during World War II . He was assigned to take part in the Army Specialized Training Program at the University of Nebraska. However, because of the shortage of fighting men overseas, the Army Specialized Training Program was closed and John was assigned to the Army 44th Division as a combat rifleman in France.

While serving in France, John attained the rank of Platoon Sergeant and took part in the capture of German rocket scientist Wernher Von Braun. As World War II in Europe neared its end, John, because of his knowledge of French learned at Classical and German learned at Nebraska U, was reassigned to the Counter Intelligence Corps of the 44th Div. where he worked against German saboteurs and other 5th column agents.

Following the end of the war, John returned to Harvard and graduated in 1946. He then entered Boston University, earning a Masters Degree in German Literature in 1949. John, with his new wife Betty, moved to Washington DC. He became a member of the National Security Agency [NSA] where he used his knowledge and talents as a former combat soldier and an intelligence operative to help protect our country from the threat of the Soviet Union. In the NSA, John worked as a cryptologist and became the Commandant of the NSA’s National Cryptology School. John also served seven years overseas with the Department of Defense retiring in 1980 as an Assistant Director.

John currently lives in Maryland with Betty, his wife of 57 years. He and Betty have three children, five grandchildren and a “gaggle” of step-great grandchildren.

What does John say about the impact that Classical has had on his life and those who attended Classical with him? “I shall be forever grateful to the preparation for life it gave to us.”

John, thank you for your dedication and service to our country.
